Now

Current status: (~updated 2024-08-07)

  • Making a “Now” page. Got the idea from https://blog.avas.space/now/
  • Finished setting up the Johnny.Decimal system for my Obsidian files. Holding off on using it for the rest of my computer and physical paper files. Most of what I look for is in Obsidian now.
  • Stalled on how to begin writing and make it a habit. I guess the first thing is to start writing about writing. Perhaps 10 minutes each day is a good start to develop a habit. Maybe I can get a feel for why I want to do it and what may keep me from it.

Reading currently:

  • The Way of Chuang Tzu by Thomas Merton
  • When Brains Dream: Exploring the Science and Mystery of Sleep by Robert Stickgold and Antonio Zadra
  • Processmind: A User’s Guide to Connecting with the Mind of God by Arnold Mindell
  • When Fragments Make a Whole Lory Widmer Hess

I’m planning to throw some fiction back into the mix when I finish reading one of these. I’ve been reading only non-fiction for a few months and I’m missing the fiction. Planning to read In Ascension by Martin MacInnes which I have on hold at the library.

Depth and Mysticism Book Group:

I’m in this group facilitated by Martha Crawford (https://www.whatashrinkthinks.com/workandpractice)The group meets every 2 weeks for an hour.

We are currently reading The Way of Chuang Tzu by Thomas Merton. Looks like we’ll finish the book around aroung August 29th. I don’t know what the next book is going to be, but we should know real soon. I’ll post more here about that.

Happenings:

Tropical Storm Debby came by prior to landfall and soaked us. The wind left many palm branches scattered around the yard to pick up and burn. At my age this is a good workout.

Ups and Downs:

  • Had to cancel two morning walks due to the aforementioned Debby, but the morning walk has become a habit.
  • I’ve been adding small 5-minute exercise routines into my day. For two weeks I’ve done one of these each day. This week I added another session each day. I want to do 3 of these in addition to my walk each day. I put them in during times when I am sedentary to break up the sitting time.
  • The nightly stretching session is going well and seems to just about be a habit.
  • Current morning routine is about 3 hours: Meditation, journal, reading, breakfast and podcasts, walk, and then off to my day. It’s quite non-productive, but I don’t plan to change that.

What I want to do:

  • Write. This is mostly as a way of thinking and not necessarily to share.
  • Digital art for my personal expression not likely to share - I got a Wacom tablet years ago and have hardly used it.
  • Learn more BASH scripting and maybe read a book I have on Perl. Looking for more ability do little jobs with data and also just to have the fun of learning and and writing code.
